Copying a key and making one are different jobs
Self-service key kiosks sit inside retail stores now, and the arguments about them are unhelpful in both directions. The machine is not a scam, and it is not a locksmith in a box. It performs one operation, and the operators publish the limits of that operation plainly.
What a kiosk does is duplicate. What it cannot do is originate. Those are two different operations rather than two grades of the same one, and the gap between them is where a trip to a kiosk either works or wastes an afternoon.
The first instruction settles most of the question. The process opens with "Insert your existing car key." After that, "The kiosk scans your key, including transponder (chip) data when supported." A scanner needs something underneath it, and every step after the first assumes a key in hand.
Put the worst case to the operator and the answer is on its own vehicle-keys page: "Unfortunately, with no working key to your car only a locksmith can create a key for you." Worth noting where that sentence comes from. It is the kiosk operator describing the limit, not a locksmith describing a competitor.
Origination begins somewhere else entirely. With no blade to trace, the cuts have to be derived from the vehicle's key code or read out of the lock itself, and the transponder then has to be taught to the immobilizer over the diagnostic port, on the manufacturer's terms and timetable. That is the substance of getting a replacement car key made.
Why the kiosk option exists, and is lawful
Connecticut registers locksmiths under Connecticut General Statutes s. 20-691. The statute's definition of locksmithing - "the inspection, installation, recombination, rekeying, service or repair of locks or locking devices" - expressly excludes retail key duplication, and it separately exempts auto service dealers servicing automobile locks, along with towing services.
So a kiosk copying keys at a retail counter sits outside the registration scheme by design rather than by loophole. Duplication was never treated as locksmithing: nothing in a copy is being inspected, recombined or repaired. It also explains why the two options feel so unlike each other in practice.
What the kiosk will copy, and it is a real list
Within duplication the coverage is genuinely wide, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Nearly everything on an ordinary key ring can be reproduced by a machine, and for a second house key that is a reasonable errand.
Vehicles are on the list too, with coverage claimed across more than 40,000 make, model and year combinations. Either route turns on the same few variables, which are also the parts a locksmith quote is built from: whether a working key exists, whether the new one needs programming as well as cutting, the time of day, the travel distance, and whether the work happens at the car or at a bench.
- House keys of the usual kind, plus the padlock keys for a gate, a shed or a storage unit.
- Mailbox keys where the box is privately owned, residential or curbside, and office, desk and cabinet keys.
- Mechanical car keys, and what the operator calls select transponder keys.
- RFID access devices where compatible: the fob on a lanyard that opens an apartment lobby or an office door.
Where the kiosk stops
The exclusions are published too, and they sort into five groups. Four of them are policy about security rather than any shortcoming in the machine.
A patented keyway, a postal mailbox and a master-keyed building all depend on copies being hard to obtain, so a machine that made them easy would defeat the purpose. Proximity and smart keys are the technical case, where the key is programming tied to one vehicle rather than a shape cut in a blade.
- Patented key designs, which the operator's page says must come only from authorized locksmiths. Dimpled and side-cut high-security keyways belong in this group.
- Proximity, smart and push-to-start keys, where the page points to "advanced encrypted Smart Keys, proprietary proximity systems, manufacturer-specific programming, enhanced immobilizer technology".
- Mailbox keys under Postal Service control, and mailbox systems a property manager keeps restricted.
- Some commercial master key systems, built as an access hierarchy that a self-service copy would quietly flatten.
- Any key that is bent, cracked, broken, excessively worn or heavily corroded.
A few days by mail, and the order that holds up
Two outcomes exist for a copied car key. One arrives programmed and works immediately. The other, in the operator's wording, is "Shipped to you with easy step-by-step DIY programming instructions within a few days."
While the original still works, that is a perfectly good deal: the spare shows up, gets programmed on the driveway, and waits in a drawer. With the car undrivable, the same sentence reads differently. A few days of waiting is measured in rides borrowed, a vehicle sitting wherever it stopped being useful, and a programming routine to attempt alone at the end of it. The question then is not kiosk or locksmith. It is waiting or somebody coming out.
One more case belongs here, the one a kiosk is right to turn away: the key that is already failing. A blade worn thin, cracked, or snapped off in a lock is precisely what the exclusion list describes. Duplication is faithful, reproducing the original complete with its wear, which is how one tired key becomes two.
Run the sequence the other way around. Have one accurate key made first, cut properly and proved in the lock it has to open, then take copies from that. For a driver in Waterbury, or out toward Watertown, the sorting rule is short. A working key that needs a twin belongs at the machine. A key that is gone, a patented keyway, a smart fob, or a key that has already failed belongs with car key and fob work in Waterbury, which starts at the vehicle.
Three short answers
Can a kiosk make a car key if every key is lost?
No. The process starts by inserting an existing working key for the machine to scan, so one has to exist. The kiosk operator's own vehicle-keys guidance states that with no working key to the car, only a locksmith can create a key. That job means originating a key from the vehicle's code or lock and enrolling the chip to the immobilizer.
Will a kiosk copy a smart key or a push-to-start fob?
